1 Chronicles 6:71 · King James Version
Meaning
Within this verse, we see a clear allocation of land to the sons of Gershom from the half tribe of Manasseh. Golan, located in Bashan, was granted to the sons of Gershom along with its surrounding suburbs. Golan was a city of refuge, providing sanctuary for those who had inadvertently caused harm to others and needed protection from potential retaliation. Ashtaroth, another significant settlement with its suburbs, was also given to the sons of Gershom. Ashtaroth was known for its religious significance, as it was a center for the worship of pagan deities. By bestowing these territories upon the sons of Gershom, the tribe of Manasseh exemplified their commitment to honoring their ancestral heritage and ensuring the well-being of their fellow Israelites. This distribution of land underscores the importance of community and cooperation within the tribes of Israel, emphasizing the value of providing for one another and upholding justice and sanctuary for all.
Theological Overview
One theological interpretation of the allocation of land to the sons of Gershom from the half tribe of Manasseh is that it reflects God's faithfulness in providing for the Levites, who were not given a specific territory like the other tribes of Israel. The Levites, including the sons of Gershom, were responsible for the service of the tabernacle and later the temple, so it was crucial for them to have land for sustenance. This allocation from the half tribe of Manasseh demonstrates God's provision and care for those who are dedicated to serving Him.
Additionally, a word study of the places mentioned in the verse can provide further insight into the historical and cultural context of the passage. Golan in Bashan was a city known for its fertile land and served as a place of refuge for those seeking safety. Ashtaroth was a city dedicated to the worship of the Canaanite goddess of fertility, highlighting the spiritual challenges faced by the Israelites in their journey. Understanding the significance of these locations helps to enrich our understanding of the verse and its implications for the Israelites in their conquest of the Promised Land.
