1 Corinthians 14:5
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1 Corinthians 14:5 · King James Version
Meaning
The verse highlights the importance of prophecy over speaking in tongues within the context of the church. While the ability to speak in tongues is deemed desirable, the emphasis in this verse is on the significance of prophesying for the edification of the church. Prophecy involves conveying messages from God to the people, providing guidance, encouragement, and enlightenment. It is believed to be a more meaningful and beneficial gift for the community as a whole. The verse suggests that unless one interprets their tongues so that the church can understand and benefit from the message, prophecy remains superior. The ultimate goal is for the church to be strengthened and uplifted by the words shared, emphasizing the importance of communication that contributes to the spiritual growth and well-being of the congregation.
Theological Overview
Within this verse, the Apostle Paul is addressing the Corinthian church regarding the use of spiritual gifts, specifically the gift of speaking in tongues and the gift of prophecy. Paul expresses his desire that all members of the church would speak in tongues, but he emphasizes the superiority of prophecy over tongues. This preference for prophecy is based on the edification and building up of the church body. The ability to communicate God's message clearly and effectively through prophecy is seen as more beneficial for the church as a whole, as it brings understanding and encouragement to believers. Paul also highlights the importance of interpretation when it comes to speaking in tongues. If there is someone present who can interpret the tongues, then it can have the same edifying effect as prophecy. However, if there is no interpretation, it is better to prioritize prophecy to ensure the church is strengthened and encouraged in their faith.
