1 Samuel 15:20 · King James Version

Meaning

In this verse from the book of 1 Samuel, Saul is speaking to the prophet Samuel, claiming that he has followed the instructions given to him by the Lord. Saul states that he has carried out the command to destroy the Amalekites, including their king, Agag. This verse is significant as it highlights the importance of obedience to God's commands. By obeying the voice of the Lord and carrying out His will, Saul believed he was fulfilling his duty. However, this passage also serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience. In later verses, it is revealed that Saul did not fully carry out the command, sparing Agag and some of the best livestock. This act of disobedience ultimately leads to Saul losing his kingship. Therefore, this verse serves as a crucial lesson on the importance of obeying God completely and the repercussions of failing to do so.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Saul claims to have obeyed the voice of the Lord by carrying out his instructions to utterly destroy the Amalekites. However, upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that Saul did not fully obey the Lord's command. Although Saul brought Agag, the king of Amalek, he failed to completely annihilate the Amalekite people as instructed by God. This highlights the importance of complete obedience to God's commands and the consequences of partial obedience. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the significance of following God's instructions diligently and completely, without compromise or deviation. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of obedience in the life of a believer and the severity of consequences for failing to fully obey God's word.
