Exodus 12:19 · King James Version

Meaning

In this verse, the presence of leaven is forbidden in the houses of Israel for seven days. Leaven is a substance that causes bread to rise and ferment. Symbolically, it is often associated with impurity, corruption, or sin. By removing leaven from their homes during this time, the Israelites were demonstrating their commitment to holiness and purity. The consequence for consuming leavened bread during this period was to be cut off from the congregation of Israel. This severe punishment served as a deterrent and emphasized the importance of obeying God's commandments. Whether one was a stranger or a native-born Israelite, the same rule applied. This verse highlights the seriousness with which the Israelites were expected to follow God's laws and maintain their spiritual integrity.
