Jeremiah 10:11

Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

Jeremiah 10:11 · King James Version

Meaning

In this verse, God is emphasizing His sovereignty and power over all things. By stating that the gods who did not create the heavens and the earth will perish, God is revealing that only He, the true Creator, will endure forever. This message serves as a reminder to the Israelites, and to all readers of the Bible, that there is only one true God who deserves worship and praise. The verse also warns against idolatry, as worshiping false gods who did not create the world is futile and ultimately fruitless. By acknowledging God as the ultimate Creator and sustainer of the heavens and the earth, we are reminded of His majesty and greatness, and encouraged to place our trust and faith in Him alone.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the absolute sovereignty and power of the one true God over all other gods. The declaration that the gods who did not create the heavens and the earth will perish serves as a reminder to the people of Israel that idols and false gods are mere creations of human hands and imaginations. In contrast, the God of Israel is the Creator of the entire universe and therefore deserves all worship and praise. This verse also underscores the importance of worshiping the true God who alone has the power to sustain and uphold all things. In terms of word studies, the phrase "the gods" in this verse comes from the Hebrew word "elohim," which can refer to both false gods/idols and the one true God, depending on the context. The use of this word in this verse highlights the contrast between the powerless false gods and the almighty God of Israel.
