Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.

Jeremiah 50:45 · King James Version

Meaning

The verse from the Book of Jeremiah is a prophecy against Babylon, a powerful empire that oppressed many nations, including Israel. In this verse, God is revealing his counsel and purposes regarding the destruction of Babylon and the judgment that will come upon the land of the Chaldeans. The mention of "the least of the flock shall draw them out" signifies that even the weakest and most vulnerable among the Babylonians will play a role in their downfall, as God's divine plan unfolds. The verse speaks to the inevitable desolation that will come upon Babylon, as God's judgment is carried out upon them for their arrogance and wickedness. Through this prophecy, God is asserting his sovereignty over all nations and reminding the people of Babylon that no one is beyond his reach or outside of his judgment. It serves as a warning to all who oppose God's will and a reminder of his ultimate power and authority over all creation.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Jeremiah 50:45, the prophet Jeremiah is warning the people of Babylon about the counsel of the Lord and his purposes against them. The mention of the 'land of the Chaldeans' is a reference to Babylon, as the Chaldeans were a prominent group in that region. The prophet predicts that even the least significant individuals in Babylon (represented by 'the least of the flock') will play a role in drawing the Babylonians out and bringing destruction upon them. This serves as a reminder that God's plans are sovereign and no one is exempt from his judgment. The imagery of making their habitation desolate emphasizes the complete destruction that will come upon Babylon as a result of going against the will of the Lord. The parallels to modern-day society can be drawn, reminding us that we must always heed the counsel of the Lord and be mindful of his purposes to avoid similar consequences.
