Jeremiah 52:15 · King James Version

Meaning

During the time of the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, was responsible for leading the captives away from the city. This verse highlights how Nebuzaradan took certain poor individuals as captives, along with the remaining people in the city who had fallen away or surrendered to the Babylonian king. The verse emphasizes the harsh reality of war and the consequences of defeat, as even the most vulnerable members of society were not spared from being taken captive. The Babylonian capture of Jerusalem led to the exile of many Israelites, with only a remnant of the population left behind. This event serves as a reminder of the power and devastation of military conquest, as well as the impact it has on innocent civilians caught in the midst of conflict.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carrying away certain of the poor of the people of Judah into captivity in Babylon. This event serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience to God. The people of Judah had turned away from God and His commandments, leading to their defeat and being taken into captivity. The term "residue" in this verse refers to the remaining people in the city who were also captured by Nebuzaradan. The mention of those who fell away to the king of Babylon implies that some had chosen to align themselves with the enemy rather than remain faithful to God. This verse highlights the importance of staying true to God's word and not straying from His path, as the consequences of disobedience can be severe.
