Numbers 20:12
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
Numbers 20:12 · King James Version
Meaning
God spoke to Moses and Aaron because they had not believed in Him and sanctified Him in the eyes of the people of Israel. This lack of belief and failure to demonstrate the holiness of God led to a severe consequence - they were told that they would not be able to enter the promised land that God had set aside for His people. This was a significant punishment, as Moses had been leading the Israelites through the wilderness for many years with the goal of reaching the land of Canaan. The importance of faith and obedience to God's commands is evident in this verse, as it shows that even the most faithful leaders can face consequences if they do not fully trust in God and uphold His holiness. The verse serves as a reminder to always believe in God's promises and to honor His name in all actions, so that we may receive the blessings He has in store for us.
Theological Overview
In this verse, the key phrase that is often focused on for theological interpretation is "Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel." This highlights the importance of faith and belief in God's commands. Moses and Aaron's lack of faith led to their disobedience in following God's instructions, which ultimately resulted in them not being able to enter the promised land. This serves as a reminder to believers of the consequences of not trusting in God and his plans. The word "sanctify" in this context means to set apart as holy or to be dedicated to God. By not following God's commands, Moses and Aaron failed to demonstrate God's holiness and authority in the eyes of the people of Israel. This verse emphasizes the importance of faith, obedience, and sanctification in the eyes of God and the consequences of failing to uphold these principles.
