Psalms 17:14

From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

Psalms 17:14 · King James Version

Meaning

This verse from Psalms highlights the contrast between those who trust in the Lord and those who are focused on worldly pursuits. The men of the world mentioned here are described as being preoccupied with their portion in this life, seeking after material wealth and leaving behind their inheritance for their descendants. Their focus is on the temporal, with their bellies being filled with hidden treasures. However, the psalmist acknowledges that true fulfillment comes from God, who is the one who ultimately sustains and provides for His people. Those who put their trust in God will receive their portion from Him, which goes beyond material possessions and includes spiritual blessings and eternal life. This verse serves as a reminder to prioritize seeking after God's kingdom and righteousness, rather than being consumed by the pursuit of wealth and worldly success.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse highlights the contrast between the fleeting wealth and prosperity of the worldly individuals, versus the eternal blessings and protection offered by the Lord. The "men of the world" refer to those whose focus is solely on material gain and temporary pleasures, often at the expense of their spiritual well-being. They are likened to those whom God has filled with hidden treasures, yet their ultimate destiny is limited to the temporal realm. In contrast, the faithful followers of God rely on His providence and trust in His promises, knowing that their true inheritance lies beyond this life. The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing eternal values over earthly possessions, as well as the transient nature of worldly success.
