Almost everyone who reads the Bible on a phone has YouVersion on it. Looking for an alternative usually does not mean it is bad — it means something about the shape of it has stopped working for you.
What YouVersion is
YouVersion is the Bible app: free, enormous, on hundreds of millions of phones, with a great many translations and a vast catalogue of reading plans. It is built around community — friends, plans you take together, verses you share — and around streaks and badges that mark how many days in a row you have opened it.
What it does better
Several things, plainly. It is free, and free matters. It has more translations and more plans than we will ever have. If you want to read alongside your small group or your church, its social layer does that well and ours does not exist. For an enormous number of people it is the reason they read the Bible at all, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Where Devout is different
Devout is small on purpose. One page each morning rather than a library to choose from: a passage, a reflection, a voice from the Christian past, a question for your journal. The decision about what to read is already made when you arrive, which is the point — the deciding is where most mornings are lost.
It is also shaped to your tradition. You say where you stand when you sign up, and that answer changes the reflection you are given, the calendar you follow, and the writers you are read to by. Eleven traditions, each with its own material — the lectionary and the saints, the synaxarion, the Book of Common Prayer, Wesley, Spurgeon, the catechisms.
And there is no one else in it. No friends list, no shared plans, no feed. Your journal is private and exports whenever you ask. There is no streak, no badge, and nothing that resets if you miss a Tuesday.
Which suits you
If free is the requirement, or if reading with other people is what keeps you going, stay with YouVersion — it is very good at both and we are not trying to be. If you have found the streak makes you feel worse rather than better, or you want a reading shaped to your own tradition rather than a general one, that is the gap Devout was built into.

The whole of Devout is open for seven days, with no card taken and nothing to cancel if you decide against it. That is long enough to know — a daily practice announces itself quickly, and so does a bad fit.
