Spurgeon's Daily Meditations
In everything give thanks
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Mark the apostle's word: in EVERY thing. Not in the good things only — that is easy. Not when health and home and friend are given — any unconverted heart could thank for that. But in every thing — in pain as well as ease, in loss as well as gain, in winter as well as summer.
How can this be? Because the Christian believes that all things work together for good to them that love God. The bitter cup is sweetened by the hand that mixes it. The sharp affliction is the love-stroke of the heavenly Father. There is no chance with us; every drop is measured.
This is the will of God concerning thee. Then it is no light matter; it is thy duty and thy honour. Cultivate the thankful spirit. The unthankful heart is a leaky vessel — the mercy poured in runs out as fast. The thankful heart is a treasury that gathers as it pours.
