Rejoice in the Lord

“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”

— Philippians 4:4

Some say, 'It is well enough to rejoice when one is rich, but I am poor.' But the apostle who said 'Rejoice in the Lord' was a prisoner in chains when he wrote it. There is the source of Christian joy: not in our circumstances, but in our Lord.

The Lord changes not. He is the same yesterday, today, and for ever. Our joy in him, then, may be a constant joy. The merchant rejoices when his ship comes in, and is cast down when it is lost at sea; but the believer rejoices in him whose ship can never be lost.

'And again I say, Rejoice.' The apostle is so anxious for it, he repeats himself. He knows the Christian's tendency to droop, to sigh, to hang the head. Up, soul of mine, and rejoice — and again, rejoice.
