The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”

— 2 Corinthians 8:9

What riches were his! All things were made by him and for him; the cattle on a thousand hills are his; the gold and silver of every mountain are his; the heavens themselves are the work of his fingers. Such was his wealth.

And yet — for thy sake — he became poor. Poor in birth: a stable was his nursery, swaddling clothes his royal robes. Poor in life: he had not where to lay his head. Poor in death: stripped naked on a cross, with men dividing his garments.

Why this poverty? That thou through it mightest be rich. Rich in righteousness, rich in pardon, rich in adoption, rich in heaven. The exchange has been made: his riches for thy poverty, thy poverty for his riches. Wilt thou not love him who loved thee so?
