The name of Jesus

“And thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

— Matthew 1:21

All the gospel is in the name. Jesus — Saviour. The angel did not say 'He shall help his people' or 'He shall instruct his people' or 'He shall set them an example.' He said he shall SAVE. Save from what? From their sins.

From the guilt of sins — they shall not be condemned. From the power of sins — they shall not be enslaved. From the love of sins — they shall not desire to return. From the practice of sins — they shall walk in newness of life. From the presence of sins at last — they shall stand spotless before the throne.

What a name for the weary sinner to take upon his tongue! Whisper it; cry it; lean upon it. The name itself is salvation, for it is the name of him in whom there is salvation. There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
