Wesley's warning against the narrow spirit that despises any good work done outside one's own party, denomination, or church. Forbid them not.
Sermon 38 of 44 · 1750 · Mark 9:38-39
A Caution Against Bigotry
A passage from the sermon
Forbid him not. If we see a man casting out devils — bringing sinners to repentance, raising those that were dead in trespasses and sins to a life of righteousness — and yet he followeth not us, what shall we do? Forbid him not. He doeth a work of God: forbid him not, on any pretence whatever.
It is not necessary that he should opine as I opine, or join the same congregation, or observe the same forms. If he be casting out devils in the name of Christ, he is on Christ's side; and woe be to me if I hinder him. Better hold thy peace and labour for thy own salvation.
