Preached by Charles Wesley before the University of Oxford, included by John in the Standard Sermons. A trumpet-call to spiritual awakening.
Sermon 3 of 44 · 1742 · Ephesians 5:14
Awake, Thou That Sleepest
A passage from the sermon
Awake, thou that sleepest! Know thy disease! Know thyself! That thou art a fallen spirit; that thy only business in the present world is to recover from thy fall; to regain that image of God wherein thou wast created. See, on the cross of Christ thy hopes! See, and let thine eye affect thy heart!
O, sinner, awake! Thou hast slept too long! Awake, even now, and rise from the dead, that Christ may give thee light. Pour out thy heart in prayer to God; not in vain words and idle repetitions, but in earnest, fervent prayer, that he would speak the word, and thou shalt live.
