One of Wesley's late sermons. Reflecting on the strange providences that had attended the Methodist movement, he marvels at the unsearchable wisdom of God in raising up his people from nothing.
Sermon 44 of 44 · 1784 · Romans 11:33
The Wisdom of God's Counsels
A passage from the sermon
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! He works by means unforeseen, in seasons unexpected, through instruments unlikely. What man would have chosen the persons whom God has raised up? Who would have foreseen the way the work has gone?
Let us, then, learn humility. Let us trust him in what we do not understand. Let us go on, doing the work he has given us to do, knowing that he who has begun a good work in his Church will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
