The pure in heart, the peacemakers, the persecuted for righteousness' sake. The final Beatitudes — and the highest.
Sermon 23 of 44 · 1748 · Matthew 5:8-12
Upon Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount, III
A passage from the sermon
Blessed are the pure in heart. They who are pure in heart see God in all things here, as well as enjoy the sight of him hereafter. They see his hand continually stretched out, both in the kingdom of nature and the kingdom of grace. They see his goodness, his wisdom, his power, in all his works.
Blessed are ye when men shall revile you. The reproach of Christ is the highest glory; the being persecuted for righteousness' sake, the surest mark that we follow him who suffered before us. Rejoice when this falleth to your lot: for great is your reward in heaven.
