Abide in Me
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.”
All the Saviour's blessings come to us in this one word — Abide. The branch has nothing to do but to remain where it is. It does not labour to draw the sap, nor strain to bring forth fruit. It abides, and the life of the vine flows through it of itself.
Do not be content with the beginning. Christ has welcomed you; abide in him. Make no plans for fruit-bearing apart from him. Do not measure today's grace by yesterday's experience — the branch must abide afresh each morning, drawing new life from the vine. The whole of the Christian life is contained in this little word: Abide.
And how shall we abide? By trusting. The branch does not understand the vine; it does not need to. It rests its whole weight upon it. So rest your whole weight upon Christ, and you will find that he is enough.
