I Am the Vine, Ye Are the Branches

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

— John 15:5

The branch is as truly a part of the vine as the root or the stem. There is one life flowing through the whole — and the branch is wholly the vine's, kept and fed and used for the vine's own purposes.

What a wonderful image this is of the Christian's place. We are not merely Christ's servants, his disciples, his followers — we are his branches. He has joined himself to us, and us to him, with a bond that nothing can break. His life is our life. His sap is our sap. His Father is our husbandman.

Then receive this great truth into your heart today: you are a branch of the True Vine. Do not let the smallness of your fruit, nor the dryness of your seasons, tempt you to doubt it. The branch may be slender; it may pass through a winter; but if it is in the vine, the vine will see to its fruit in time.
