Believe Me That I Am in the Father

The whole life of Christ on earth was the life of the Father in him. He did nothing of himself; he spoke nothing of himself; the Father who dwelt in him did the works.

And what was the secret of that life? It was unbroken communion. The Son lived as though the Father were always at his side, because the Father was always at his side. He looked away from himself to the Father — for direction, for words, for strength, for everything.

Now consider: just as the Father was in Christ, so Christ is in you. The same secret is offered. Look away from yourself. Look to him as he looked to the Father. Let no decision, no word, no hour pass without the consciousness of his presence. This is the Christian life: not imitation from a distance, but indwelling near at hand.
