Andrew Murray's Daily Meditations
Humility and Faith
“How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?”
Christ here unmasks the great obstacle to faith. It is not intellectual doubt; it is hidden pride. As long as we are seeking honour from one another — the approval of our circle, the good opinion of our neighbours — we cannot believe truly. Faith needs an empty hand.
This is why the proud cannot pray. The proud cannot receive. The proud cannot rest in Christ. He is the gift of God to those who have nothing — and only the humble will admit that they have nothing.
Learn, then, to seek the honour that cometh from God only. Let the praise of men become a small thing; let his Well done be your one ambition. When you have come to that, you will find that faith is no longer a struggle. The hand that has stopped reaching for honour is free at last to receive the Saviour.
