He Humbled Himself

“He made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death.”

— Philippians 2:7-8

See here the humility of Christ. He who was rich became poor. He who was equal with God took the place of a servant. He who could command angels washed feet. He who knew no sin became sin for us.

This is not an example we are to copy from outside ourselves. It is the very nature of the Saviour who lives within us. The same Spirit that emptied him of glory is at work in his disciple, emptying us of self, lowering us into the place where we can be of use.

Do not flee humility when it comes. Do not resent the lowering. He is conforming you to himself. Every time you choose the lower place — every time you let another go first, every time you take blame that is not yours, every time you bear silently what could be answered — you are being made into his likeness. And that is the only likeness that lasts.
