Liberty Where the Spirit Is
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
There is a religion that binds — that loads the soul with rules, that measures every duty, that turns the Christian life into a long account-book. From that religion, the Spirit sets us free.
The liberty of the Spirit is not the liberty to do what we please; it is the liberty to do what God pleases, gladly. It is the liberty of a son in his father's house — at home, unafraid, willing. The rules have not gone; they have become natural. What once was duty has become delight.
If your Christian life feels heavy, ask whether the Spirit has been given his place in it. He has come to give you a new heart, one that loves what God loves. Yield to him, and you will find the yoke is easy and the burden is light, because he is carrying it within you.
