Wait on Thy God Continually

“Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.”

— Hosea 12:6

Continually — not at set hours, not on Sundays, not in emergencies. As breathing is to the body, so waiting on God is to be the unbroken posture of the soul.

This is more than the practice of prayer; it is the posture beneath the prayer. The Christian who waits continually is the one who, whatever his hands are doing, is leaning inwardly upon his God. He does not need to break off his work to wait; the waiting is woven into the work.

Ask for this grace. It cannot be manufactured; it is a gift of the Spirit. But it is given to those who ask, and ask earnestly. Say within yourself, many times this day: My soul, wait thou only upon God. The habit will deepen. The Presence will steady. And the long obedience will become a long, quiet, continual fellowship.
