Wesley's careful exposition of the law of God — its origin in the heart of God, its essential character, its proper place in the Christian life.
Sermon 34 of 44 · 1750 · Romans 7:12
The Original, Nature, Properties, and Use of the Law
A passage from the sermon
The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. It is the copy of the eternal mind, the transcript of the divine nature. Such is the original of the law of God.
Its use is fourfold: to convince the world of sin; to bring sinners unto life; to keep them alive — that is, to maintain them in the life of grace and lead them on into the fulness of love. The law is not abolished by the gospel; it is established by it. The believer delights in the law of God after the inward man, and finds in obedience not bondage but liberty.
