Wesley's response to those who claimed that the doctrine of justification by faith abolished the law. On the contrary: faith establishes the law, in heart and in life.
Sermon 35 of 44 · 1750 · Romans 3:31
The Law Established Through Faith, I
A passage from the sermon
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid! Yea, we establish the law. We establish the law, first, by setting forth the necessity of it as a means of grace; secondly, by preaching faith in such a manner as to lead men to a life of unfeigned obedience.
There is no contradiction between faith and the law of God. The faith of Christ is no enemy to a holy life; rather, it is the only means by which any man ever did, or ever can, live such a life. We never had any other plan than this: that all who would be saved by faith must be saved as the new creatures of God, conforming to his image and walking in his commandments.
