A companion to Sermon 5, drawing out the contrast between the righteousness of the law and the righteousness of faith. The first asks of us what we cannot do; the second offers us what only God can give.
Sermon 6 of 44 · 1746 · Romans 10:5-8
The Righteousness of Faith
A passage from the sermon
The righteousness of the law saith, 'Do this, and thou shalt live.' Do all that is written in the book of the law in the manner therein required, namely, with thy whole strength and might, and thou shalt have everlasting life. But the righteousness of faith implies no such terrible condition. There is no need that thou shouldest first work all the works of the law in order to thy justification.
God hath now found out another way, to bring sinners to himself. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; and thou shalt be saved. Believe, and thou art justified now: believest thou this? Then the peace of God reigneth in thy heart.
