On rash judgment, the right way of admonishing others, and the Golden Rule. Wesley shows how love must guide every reproof and every dealing with our neighbour.
Sermon 30 of 44 · 1750 · Matthew 7:1-12
Upon Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount, X
A passage from the sermon
Judge not, that ye be not judged. This means, beware of judging without full and certain knowledge; without absolute necessity; without tender love. We must take heed lest we condemn the innocent for the guilty, or the guilty in such a manner as is not consistent with charity and humility.
Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so to them. This is the royal law of love. It is the sum of all the commandments touching our neighbour. Whosoever does what he can to follow this rule cannot but be a true and faithful follower of his Master.
